UK black actor and #back2blackawards supporter Charles ‘Chucky’ Venn is currently starring in the BBC1 prime-time drama Casualty and causing a bit of a stir with his characters award winning story-lines. Chucky’s progression to prime time soap-star and Hollywood actor is an inspiration for all and is especially relevant to young UK people of colour. This August Bank Holiday Weekend Casualty celebrates 30 years on air, no mean feat and Chucky and his fellow cast members have been given the privilege of delivering the feature length anniversary special. Tune in to BBC1 this Saturday and see Chucky and crew do their thing.
Fellow actor Winston Ellis has featured in some global blockbusters including Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman Returns alongside Charles Venn and the late Heath Ledger. A UK ‘man of colour’ who knows all too well what ‘that’ means! He has overcome obstacles and prejudices that British society have only recently conceded exist. He has a passion and desire to help our young navigate and remove the hurdles before them and we welcome him to the #back2blackawards family.
Loose Woman [ITV], presenter, songstress, business woman and mother Jamelia joins the #back2blackawards family. A UK woman of colour Jamelia has lived much of her adult life in the media spotlight after her singing talent secured her her first major record deal at the tender age of 15. Since those teenage days she has gone from strength to strength and her many achievements and attitude stand as a great example to our young sisters. Catch Jamelia, Winston Ellis and all our other wonderful guests, speakers and performers LIVE at BAFTA Sunday 02.10.2016; and kick off UK Black History Month in style.
Hil St. Soul
Neo-Soul lovers will know that from when Kedar Massenburg introduced us to D’Angelo, Maxwell and Ms Badu. there was no going back and the Neo-Soul movement was born. Although dominated and led by our U.S. cousins the UK made its own little contribution to the movement with Hil St. Soul being one of our leading players. Vocally and musically she could get involved and with track ‘Pieces’ she hit it outta the park. When she blessed Dwele everyone knew what time it was. Come listen to our ‘Black Rose’ Hil St. Soul LIVE at the #back2blackawards alongside the other fabulous acts and speakers.
X-Factor stars and Britains modern day answer to Boys To Men will bless us with an intimate PA in HRH Princess Anne Auditorium. If you have attended #back2blackawards then you will already know that the evening is a collection of stand out performances, enlightening and educational speakers and a celebration of our community and history, sprinkled with a touch of celebrity. This year will not be any different and you will leave BAFTA a little more informed and with that feel good factor you get when you’ve had a really good time.
With our community in mind and the recent palatable change in UK race relations we can only stress how important it is for us to be tactically astute in the ways we face the challenges that continue to effect our community here and abroad. That’s it for now, thankfully each year we have sold out and this year looks no different, so if you are thinking of coming don’t take too long to decide. Tickets online at shoobs.com or contact us directly if you wish to support the project and the work we do all year round with our young people.
